NIL: What Faculty and Staff Need to Know

NIL refers to the ability for student-athletes to use their name, image, and likeness (NIL) to participate in marketing and promotional activities, many of which were previously restricted under NCAA Bylaws.

UCF Athletics is committed to continuing to help student-athletes maximize their NIL opportunities through educational resources and community involvement and are proud of the success they have had in the NIL space.

UCF staff and faculty should review the information below for some dos and don’ts surrounding NIL.

Dos

  • Purchase items related to student-athletes’ NIL deal that are de minimis in value and for the same rate available to the general public. For example: Purchasing student-athletes’ jersey or gear from the UCF NIL Fanatics shop

  • Promote student-athletes’ NIL activity through social media, provided there is no value or cost to the institution. For example: Liking or retweeting a social media post including your favorite student-athlete promoting their gear

  • Provide others information regarding NIL at UCF or The Kingdom, the official NIL collective. For example: Sending friends or family members who are not UCF employees and want to support NIL at UCF to the UCF Athletics or The Kingdom website

Don’ts

  • Donate to or be employed by UCF’s NIL collective, The Kingdom. Friends and families are not restricted and can donate to or be employed by The Kingdom.
  • Engage in NIL deals with student-athletes if you own a business separate from UCF
  • Use NIL deals as an inducement for enrollment or continued enrollment or as pay-for-play
